What is a Social Entrepreneur?

A Social Entrepreneur harnesses innovative ideas to create social change in his or her community. They often use skills from the business world but rather than just measuring their performance in profit, they also take into account the effect their project has on society. A social entrepreneur might turn their idea into a social business which enables their project to become sustainable by making a profit at the same time as creating social change. Ashoka, one of the leading organisations supporting social entrepreneurship globally, says that social entrepreneurs “are visionaries, but also realists, and are ultimately concerned with the practical implementation of their vision above all else.”

If you have idea that has a positive effect on society, then you can consider yourself a social entrepreneur and are eligible to apply for these competitions. Check out each competition page and our FAQs for more detailed information on how to apply.

Tools and Tips

How do you go about creating social change? Transparency International recently produced this Anti-Corruption Kit: 15 Ideas for Young Activists. These are some simple but powerful ideas on how you can create change in your own community.

Inspiration

If you’re looking for inspiration, there are loads of innovative projects already out there that will help you to think like a social entrepreneur.

Take a look at some of the IACC’s previous winners of the Social Entrepreneurs Initiative! They created a web platform to fight fraud in the constructions sector; a tool that engages citizens in the process of national budget creation; an SMS report service to prevent corruption in schools among many others.
